A mobile home explosion in Columbus, Ohio on Tuesday morning sent two people to the hospital with critical injuries. Around 6:40 a.m., firefighters arrived at the Enchanted Acres mobile home park to find one of the homes engulfed in flames.

One man and one woman were taken to the adult burn center at Ohio State University’s Wexner Medical Center. They were in critical condition.

“I thought it was in my backyard,” said neighbor Jo Anne Walter. “It was ‘BOOM,’ and laying in bed, I felt it.”

Another neighbor, Carolyn Harrison, thought more than one home might be on fire because of the size of the flames. “It was totally engulfed,” she said. “I mean nothing but fire. We got dressed and came over here and it just kept exploding.”

Investigators are still trying to determine the source of the fire. Columbia Gas spent Tuesday checking the mobile park’s gas lines and said they found no problems.

The most common cause of home fires is unattended cooking, but a fire can also start because of lit candles, cigarettes, electrical issues, or arson, among other reasons.

Depending on what caused the fire, and what caused it to spread, a person who suffered injuries or property damage may be able to file a lawsuit to hold a negligent person or company accountable. For example, if a structure was not up to code, or a defective smoke alarm failed to work properly, the injured party might qualify for compensation.
