Stage 1 Mesothelioma: What You Need to Know

Mesothelioma progresses in stages, with each one having its own prognosis. Here’s what you need to know about stage 1 mesothelioma.

The Earliest Stage

Stage 1 mesothelioma is the least advanced form of the disease. At this stage, tumors remain localized in or near the lining of the lungs, abdomen, or heart. Typically, there are more treatment options available during the earliest stage, and patients tend to have a longer life expectancy.

Diagnosis and Symptoms

While an early diagnosis provides you the best chance to live longer, it’s rare that a diagnosis is made at this point. That’s because many patients don’t exhibit any symptoms at this time, and those who do tend to experience symptoms that are mild or easily mistaken for those of other illnesses such as the flu.

Prognosis

You may be wondering if a diagnosis at stage 1 — although unlikely — can lead to a clean bill of health. Unfortunately, there’s no cure for any stage of malignant mesothelioma. That said, prognosis at stage 1 is more favorable than in later stages of the disease.

Life Expectancy

Generally, life expectancy is the longest at stage 1, as the disease hasn’t yet spread beyond the lungs, abdomen, or heart. Therefore, it’s easier to contain. Approximately 41% to 46% of patients diagnosed at this stage will survive for two years. By five years, the survival rate shrinks to about 13% to 16%.

Treatment Options

Because the tumor is localized and has not yet spread, you have the most treatment options at your disposal when diagnosed at stage 1. Usually, doctors recommend patients undergo a combination of surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation. Patients must be in good-enough health to receive all of these treatments. If they are, they may live months or years beyond the average life expectancy.
