Join the Lawsuit – BioLab Chemical Plant Fire in Conyers, Georgia

The following content has been reviewed by Rene F. Rocha, Trial Attorney at Morgan & Morgan, on October 26, 2024.

Residents of Atlanta and surrounding areas are living in fear for their health and safety after a toxic fire at the BioLab chemical plant in Conyers, Georgia released odorous and hazardous chemicals into the air.

The event occurred on September 29, 2024, when a malfunctioning sprinkler system inside the BioLab plant allegedly caused a chemical fire that resulted in a toxic plume that filled the Conyers sky and could be seen for miles. Evacuations and shelter-in-place orders were announced as officials attempted to extinguish the damage.

A class action lawsuit has been filed to hold BioLab accountable for the damages suffered by the community and to raise awareness about the harm caused by this company’s alleged negligence.

What Are the Health Risks and Property Damage Caused by the BioLabs Fire?

Air quality tests conducted by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) confirmed the presence of chlorine, which can cause severe respiratory issues, skin irritation, and other adverse health effects that can persist for years.

The inhalation of chlorine can cause coughing, difficulty breathing, and permanent lung damage, especially for individuals with pre-existing conditions like asthma or COPD.

As many nearby residents were ordered to evacuate, they had no choice but to leave behind property and personal belongings that continued to be exposed to hazardous chemicals in the air.

Does BioLabs Have a History of Dangerous Accidents?

Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time that the BioLabs chemical plant has put Conyers residents in harm’s way.
In 2004, another fire and chemical plume led to the evacuation of 300 nearby residents. Then in 2020, another fire started by a water leak released hazardous chemicals into the air, closing a major highway and all surrounding businesses.

Am I Eligible to Join the BioLabs Lawsuit?

If you or your loved ones were affected by and suffered damages from the BioLabs fire, you may be eligible to join the class action lawsuit. Those who may qualify include:

  • Residents who lived within the evacuation and shelter-in-place zones and experienced adverse health issues,
  • Property owners who had property damaged or contaminated by the chemical exposure, and
  • Employees and businesses who faced economic losses due to closures caused by the fire.
