What Is an Air Fryer?
An air fryer is a kitchen countertop cooking appliance that combines a heating element and a powerful fan to circulate hot air in order to cook the food placed inside its compartment. Despite the name, an air fryer does not fry food in the traditional sense and works more similarly to a convection oven. Most air fryers on the market come in one of two basic styles: one with a cooking basket or one that appears like a toaster oven. Air fryers also come in a variety of sizes, shapes, colors, and weights, as well as in a range of price points. Consumers can purchase air fryers online on Amazon or at retailers like Walmart, Best Buy, Target, and Home Depot nationwide.
Are Air Fryers Dangerous?
Due to their design to mimic something similar to a convection oven, air fryers cook food by the use of rapid hot air circulation technology. While typically not an issue for most air fryers as they should be fitted with safety mechanisms, unfortunately, when poorly designed or even defective air fryers are released on the market, their internal and external components may get extremely hot during use. When overheated, certain elements of the air fryer may melt, break, catch fire, or even explode, which can cause personal injury and property damage.
What Are the Most Common Injuries Caused by Defective Air Fryers?
Defective air fryers may not be able to sustain the high temperatures necessary to cook certain foods. When in use and the air fryer begins to overheat, it could lead certain elements of the appliance to melt, break, catch fire, or even explode, which can cause the user to suffer from personal injury. Some of the most commonly reported personal injuries caused by defective air fryers include the following:
- Burns: Due to the high heat needed to cook food, defective air fryers may overheat, causing the handle or doors to become hot spots. Should the user unknowingly touch the doors or handle during use, they may suffer from burn injuries.
- Lacerations: Due to the glass designs on certain air fryers, if overheated, certain elements may catch fire, create an explosion, and cause the glass to shatter. In a blast, glass particles may be propelled outward toward the user, leaving them to suffer from deep cuts or tears in the skin.
- Cancer: Certain air fryers contain parts coated with nonstick materials. Those nonstick coatings most likely contain PFAS, or per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances, also known as “forever chemicals.” These chemicals have been linked to health issues such as impaired brain function, hormone disruption, and certain types of cancers.
- Death: If a defective air fryer causes a fire or explosion, you or a loved one may suffer from severe or even life-threatening injuries. In some cases, the injuries sustained due to a defective air fryer may even lead to death.
If you believe you or a loved one have suffered an injury like those listed above, or if you have lost a loved one due to a defective air fryer, we may be able to help you.
Do Defective Air Fryers Cause Fires?
Yes, in the last few years, over 3 million air fryers have been recalled in connection with potential fire hazards. According to multiple recalls listed on the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s website, certain defective air fryers can overheat, causing the handles on the door to melt or break. Other air fryers with glass door designs, when overheated, can shatter, posing fire, burn, and laceration hazards.
In the United States, cooking equipment is the leading cause of home fires year-round, and according to the Electrical Safety Foundation, the U.S. sees about 51,000 electrical fires each year. These fires cause almost 500 deaths, 1,400 injuries, and $1.3 billion in property damage annually. If you have suffered a burn injury or believe your defective air fryer was the cause of your home fire, contact a Morgan & Morgan attorney today.
How Do I Know if My Air Fryer Is Defective?
With the rise in popularity of air fryers, and so many new models on the market, it may be difficult to determine if yours is on the recall list. In order to determine if your air fryer is defective or is recalled, we recommend you contact the product manufacturer via their support hotline or website. In some cases, your air fryer may already be registered on a recall list. For full details on a recalled air fryer, check the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s website.
In recent years, multiple companies have recalled their defective air fryers due to injury hazards. Some of the most recently recalled air fryers include Insignia Air Fryers, Insignia Air Fryer Ovens, COSORI Air Fryers, and Empower Brands’ Power XL Dual Basket Air Fryers. If you believe your air fryer is defective but has yet to be recalled, you can file a complaint with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. If you have suffered an injury due to your defective air fryer, contact a Morgan & Morgan attorney today.
