Supplemental Health Insurance and Cancer Policy Fraud
Reportedly, some insurance companies selling supplemental insurance policies, including cancer policies, have adopted a new practice which has lead to the improper and unfair payment of claims under these policies. For years, insurance companies paid policy benefits based on the amount the doctor or hospital billed the patient, before any discounts the healthcare provider, doctor, or hospital may have negotiated separately with the patient’s private health insurer orMedicare.
However, some insurance companies are now paying benefits based on this discounted amount, rather than the full value of the covered service. As a result of this alleged cancer policy fraud, policyholders who have noticed a reduction in the amount of benefits paid under their supplemental insurance policy may have legal recourse.

Supplemental Insurance Policy Fraud
Supplemental insurance policies, including cancer policies, are intended to supplement a consumer's primary health insurance policy. They pay the patient directly for certain items and are not intended to pay the doctor or hospital. These supplemental insurance policies may pay a certain amount for medical tests or procedures or a daily hospital indemnity which provides a set amount to the insured for each day the patient is hospitalized. These policies, as well as other types of insurance policies, were designed to help the consumer pay other bills which might result from sickness or hospitalization. Sometimes these polices will also provide benefits for medical diagnostic, outpatient expenses, or chemotherapy or radiation treatments.
