Tennessee’s Dog Bite Law – The Dianna Acklen Act of 2007
In 2007, the state of Tennessee enacted the Dianna Acklen Act of 2007 to help dog bite victims obtain compensation from negligent pet owners whose dogs cause injuries to innocent bystanders. The Tennessee legislature passed this law after three dogs fatally attacked Dianne Acklen while she was walking through a rural residential neighborhood in Tennessee.
What Does The Law Say?
Under the Act, a dog owner has a legal duty to maintain reasonable control over his or her dog. If a dog owner fails to do so and the animal bites an innocent bystander, the victim may be able to pursue a lawsuit and hopefully recovering compensation for medical bills and other expenses incurred as a result of his or her injury.
