What Is the Deadliest Road in Florida?

Every time you go out in your car, you buckle up, make sure that your car has been properly maintained, and get in focus mode to pay attention to the road. But the same cannot be said for everyone driving throughout Florida.

As a popular place to live, work, and visit, the possibility of car accidents, pedestrian accidents, truck accidents, and motorcycle accidents in Florida is high. The weather can also change on a dime in Florida, and in many cases, backed-up traffic can provoke frustrated drivers or lead to people not paying attention behind the wheel.

With so many risks at play, it's no surprise that most people ask, “What is the deadliest road in Florida?” As a Morgan & Morgan car accident lawyer can tell you, there are many deadly roads in Florida, as accidents can and do happen anywhere throughout the Sunshine State.

You are at risk on a winding rural road late at night, just as you are at risk on a high-speed highway. However, it is typically the case that highways and other major thoroughfares have more accidents simply because of the number of people traveling on those roads.

Research has gathered which types of roads are the most likely to be involved in vehicle accidents, looking at both the rate of injuries and the rate of fatalities. The deadliest road stretches in Florida include several different locations, but some factors remain the same across many cities. For example, the month of March was home to more deadly accidents in Florida than any other month across a three-year period.

Here is our helpful overview of the deadliest roads in Florida, what you can do to stay safe, and how we can help if you’re injured on one of these roads.

  • Why Are Accidents So Common in FL?

Drivers in Florida have a legal responsibility to those they share the road with, and when the rules of the road are not followed, other drivers and passengers face major risks.

With Florida being a very popular vacation spot for spring break and a popular place for motorcyclists to hang out, it may come as no surprise that March is one of the deadliest times of the year. Furthermore, there are many different causes that can contribute to a deadly accident. From someone driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs to someone engaged in aggressive driving or excessive speeding, any of these factors can contribute to another person's likelihood of being involved in an accident.

Drunk driving is the leading cause of fatal accidents, contributing to over 21% of fatal wrecks across Florida. Alcohol in your blood can affect your behavior behind the wheel and endanger yourself and others. Even if your blood alcohol is at relatively low levels, you could put yourself at risk of being involved in a critical wreck if you get behind the wheel after drinking.

Between 2017 and 2019, however, another factor contributed to deadly accidents in Florida: distracted driving. This accounts for a total of 8% of all fatal crashes across Florida. It is not legal to drive your car while operating a cell phone or other device.

Speed is also a significant factor in many fatal crashes. You may face criminal consequences for excessive speeding in Florida, and you put yourself at risk of being involved in a serious crash.

  • What Are Some of the Deadliest Roads in Florida?

While accidents can happen anywhere in Florida, some areas have a statistically higher rate of fatal crashes. The following information was taken from a study of fatal car accidents in Florida between 2017 and 2019.

US-19 between Denton Avenue and San Marco Drive is one of the deadliest stretches of road across the entire state of Florida, with numerous fatal accidents occurring each year. Although Miami-Dade is the county in Florida that has more fatal accidents than any other county, US-1 was the deadliest road in that area.

    Bradenton US-41

Between 23rd Avenue and Pearl Avenue on US-41 in West Bradenton, the risk of an accident is statistically high. The research found that across three years, there were 23 fatalities across 22 fatal accidents.

    Tampa US-41

US-41 makes the list again for deadliest roads in Florida, between North MacDill Avenue to North 40th Street. During the three-year period studied, there were 21 fatal accidents that killed 21 people.

    St. Petersburg

On US-19 between 54th Avenue North to Queensboro Avenue South, you may be at risk of a fatal accident that comes in very close behind the other top-ranking cities. This area was home to 20 fatalities and 20 fatal accidents during the three-year period.

Oakland Park and Lauderdale Lakes State Route 816

Between Northwest 35th Avenue and Northeast Eighth Avenue, there is a strip of road where I-95 passes over, and you may be at serious risk of a fatal crash in this area. It ranks very high in comparison to some of the other cities with the greatest total number of fatal accidents.

    Tampa State Route 580

If you're driving between Webb Road and West Waters Avenue, there is a very strong chance that you may end up in an accident that leads to fatal injuries. There were 18 fatal accidents and fatalities recorded during a three-year period.

  • What Happens After Fatal Accidents?

In most serious accidents, including those where someone is killed at the scene or has severe enough injuries to warrant immediate trips to the hospital, emergency responders are sent to the scene. This is to help with getting cars and other debris off the road, making sure that injured parties get the medical attention they need, and creating police reports that might be used later on in these accident cases.

Fatal accidents are devastating, even when medical personnel and authorities do everything they can to save a victim's life. When a fatal injury happens, the victim’s surviving family is affected for many years to come. This is why wrongful death law allows surviving victims to file lawsuits to recover compensation on behalf of the loved ones they lost.

The lawyers at Morgan & Morgan recognize that no winning sum or settlement from an at-fault party will help you work through the loss and emotional pain you may feel post-accident. Filing a lawsuit, however, holds the negligent party accountable and can give your family some financial relief to move forward into the future.

Fatal accidents can look different from one wreck to another, which is why many of them have to be investigated by a team of professionals to determine what happened. More than one person might be responsible for an accident, and the lawyers at Morgan & Morgan can research your situation and find out what to do next. We're here to help you with your legal claim whether you are able to settle outside of court or go to trial.

  • What to Do After a Loved One Is Killed in an Accident?

Fatal accidents have devastating consequences for everyone involved. It can be overwhelming to sort through all of the details after a loved one has passed away, especially when you're trying to figure out the best way to recover compensation while also dealing with your grief. Florida wrongful death law enables surviving family members to file lawsuits on behalf of victims who have died due to the negligence of another party.

This can cover many different expenses, including those paid out to surviving family members as well as those associated with funds that would diminish the loved one's estate, like medical bills required for their final treatments. If you have questions about pursuing your rights and whether or not you have eligibility to open a personal injury claim, speak with the car accident lawyers at Morgan & Morgan.

Our lawyers have years of experience working in the field of helping fatal car accident family member victims. We know it can be hard to discover your own rights and decide how to move forward on your own, which is why we offer free initial consultations so you can learn more about your legal rights and also get an idea of what it's like to work with a law firm to file your legal claim.

We have earned a reputation not just in Florida but all over the country for the work we put in on behalf of our clients. We understand the Florida laws that protect victims and do everything we can to earn a settlement or verdict outcome for family members who have lost loved ones in a preventable accident.

  • Is Personal Injury the Same as Wrongful Death?

Wrongful death refers to a specific type of personal injury case in which the injured party passes away, making the family members or the estate of the deceased the recipient of any awarded compensation. Thus, wrongful death is a type of personal injury case, but not necessarily vice versa.

When someone gets hurt in an accident in Florida, they might have a personal injury claim. At Morgan & Morgan, we help victims who have been hurt in personal injury claims to come forward with a legal case to recover compensation. This is because Florida laws are there to protect victims who get hurt. In Florida, personal injury protection insurance is required so that if you get hurt, you can turn to that insurance first.
