Quinine

The lawyers at Morgan & Morgan are warning consumers about serious health risks that can result from using the malaria drug Quinine in the treatment of leg cramps.

Pharmaceutical companies have defied an FDA ban and marketed Quinine for leg cramps, which can have dangerous side effects including life-threatening irregular heartbeats and kidney failure.

Quinine is a drug traditionally used to treat Malaria. It has not been approved by the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) for use in the treatment of leg cramps. As a matter of fact, the FDA prohibits marketing Quinine for leg cramps and requires a warning against using the drug to treat leg cramps. The drug should only be used to treat Malaria. However, drug companies are marketing and promoting Quinine Sulfate to treat nocturnal (nighttime) leg cramps. The use of Quinine Sulfate to treat leg cramps may result in cardiac arrhythmia, renal (kidney) failure, blindness, hearing loss and blood disorders including thrombotic thrombocytopenia purpura (TTP) and thrombocytopenia. The FDA has received reports of more than twenty such quinine-induced injuries.
