Step 1

Ensure Immediate Safety

If a dog bites you, move to a safe location to avoid further injury. Stay calm and avoid sudden movements that might provoke the dog again. If the dog is loose, notify animal control or local authorities immediately.

Step 2

Assess the Injury

Examine the wound to determine its severity. Even minor bites can lead to infections or complications. If the wound is deep, bleeding heavily, or shows signs of infection, seek medical attention immediately.

Step 3

Clean the Wound

If the bite is not severe, wash the area thoroughly with soap and water to reduce the risk of infection. Apply an antiseptic, cover the wound with a clean bandage, and consider seeking professional medical advice to ensure proper care.

Step 4

Identify the Dog and Owner

Obtain the dog owner’s contact information and ask about the dog’s vaccination history, especially its rabies vaccine status. If the dog is a stray, notify animal control so they can capture and test the dog if necessary.

State laws vary. In some states, such as Florida, dog owners are strictly liable for bites regardless of the former viciousness of the dog or the owner’s knowledge of such viciousness. This means victims don’t need to prove the dog had a history of aggression to hold the owner accountable.

Step 5

Report the Incident

Report the bite to local animal control or public health authorities. This creates an official incident record and records the dog’s behavior.

Step 6

Document the Incident

Take photos of your injuries, where the bite occurred, and any visible signs of negligence (e.g., lack of a leash or a broken fence). Write down your recollection of the events while they are fresh in your mind.

Step 7

Seek Medical Attention

Even if the wound appears minor, visit a healthcare provider for evaluation. Dog bites can lead to infections, tetanus, or rabies, so it’s essential to receive appropriate treatment and vaccinations if necessary.

Step 8

Consult a Dog Bite Lawyer

If the bite resulted in significant injury, medical expenses, or emotional distress, speak with a lawyer experienced in dog bite cases. They can help you understand your legal options, hold the responsible party accountable, and seek compensation for your losses.
