Naples Apartment Fire Causes Partial Collapse

A three-story apartment building in Naples caught fire Monday afternoon, causing a partial collapse that trapped multiple firefighters, one of whom was hospitalized, according to reports.

The fire at Bear Creek Apartments displaced 47 residents, according to the North Collier Fire Rescue District, and the building has been condemned.

None of the apartment residents suffered severe injuries. However, as firefighters searched the building to ensure no one was inside, a partial collapse on the third floor trapped several firefighters. Most were treated on the scene, while one firefighter was hospitalized but is expected to recover fully.

Extent of the Damage

Reports indicate that at least four of the 12 apartments in the building were completely destroyed.

Naples News spoke with resident John Biero, who learned of the fire after his wife and daughter returned home to find it. His wife entered the apartment to rescue their family cat.

“This is awful. But it's no one's fault,” Biero told Naples News.

Those wishing to help the displaced families can contact the local Red Cross, which is accepting donations of new clothing, bedding, and canned goods for those affected.

Keeping Your Apartment Safe From Fires

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but it remains critical for residents to consider fire safety precautions, especially in apartment buildings.

Not all properties have proper fire safety tools, and outdated electrical wiring can lead to fires that may go unnoticed at first. Some residents reported smelling smoke up to an hour before an emergency call was placed, according to Wink News.

Fire Safety Tips

  • Ensure that your apartment has a working fire extinguisher.
  • Install and regularly test smoke detectors.
  • Be aware of emergency exits and fire escape routes.
  • Check your building’s compliance with local fire codes, such as the Naples Code of Ordinances.
