Dangerous Airbag Inflators Strike Again – This Time in BMWs

Dangerously defective airbags have been the topic of countless recalls and lawsuits, and each case keeps coming back to one automotive parts company—Takata.

In cases like this onethis one, or this one, Takata airbags were reported to have the potential to explode and project metal fragments on drivers and passengers alike. To date, at least 27 deaths and numerous injuries have occurred due to the flawed design and installation of Takata airbags in many various car models.

Most recently, BMW has announced a significant recall affecting over 390,000 vehicles due to a critical issue with airbag inflators that could explode, posing serious risks to drivers and passengers.

BMW's recall targets specific models of the 3 Series vehicles, including sedans and sports wagons produced between 2006 and 2012.

The affected models include:

  • 2006-2011 BMW 3 Series Sedans (324i, 325i, 325xi, 328i, 328xi, 330i, 330xi, 335i, 335xi)
  • 2006-2012 BMW 3 Series Sports Wagon (325xi, 328i, 328xi)
  • 2009-2011 BMW 335d

These airbags contain a specific type of inflator that can explode unexpectedly, even without an accident triggering them. The explosion can send metal fragments flying into the vehicle’s cabin, potentially causing severe injuries or fatalities. This issue is particularly alarming because it may involve airbags that were installed as replacements and not part of the vehicle's original equipment.

Owners of the affected BMW models are advised to take immediate action. BMW will start notifying owners by mail beginning August 23, 2024. Upon receiving the notification, owners should contact their local BMW dealership to schedule a free inspection and replacement of the defective airbag modules.

For those unsure if their vehicle is affected, it is recommended to check with BMW directly or visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website to verify if their car is part of the recall. The NHTSA website provides a search tool where you can enter your vehicle identification number (VIN) to see if it is subject to any recalls.
