Casey Anthony's Attorneys Attempt to Block Deposition
Casey Anthony’s lawyers are trying to block her from giving a deposition in the defamation case brought against her by a Florida woman she wrongly accused of kidnapping her daughter Caylee.
Anthony’s attorneys filed a motion asking the judge overseeing her federal bankruptcy case in Tampa to stop her from giving the deposition. According to an Associated Press report, Anthony’s attorneys claimed they were not given proper notice to prepare their client and that the woman suing Anthony, Zenaida Gonzalez, lacks merit.
Gonzalez’s attorney, Matt Morgan, feels Anthony must be held accountable under the law and that the notoriety of her prior legal troubles should not come into play in his client’s defamation suit.
“We know she doesn’t want to answer, that doesn’t mean she shouldn’t have to,” Morgan said in an email to the AP.
The motion to block Anthony’s forthcoming deposition may be too little too late, however, as the deposition is scheduled for Wednesday, October 8, in front of Gonzalez’s attorneys.
After Caylee’s disappearance in 2008, Anthony told detectives that a babysitter named Zenaida Gonzalez kidnapped the two-year-old. According to court documents, Gonzalez claims she was defamed by the statements Anthony made to law enforcement, and she should be considered a creditor in her federal bankruptcy case.
Anthony’s lawyers claim Gonzalez is merely seeking publicity by suing their client and that although she’s already be deposed in state court, she would assert her Fifth Amendment right if their motion to block Wednesday’s deposition is overruled.
Anthony was acquitted of Caylee’s murder in 2011.
