Step 1

Ensure Immediate Safety

Move away from the fire or hazardous area to prevent further harm. If possible, help others to safety without risking your own well-being. Never return to the area of the fire to retrieve personal belongings such as cash, jewelry, or documents. Smoke inhalation can be fatal.

Step 2

Call Emergency Services

Dial 911 immediately to report the fire and request medical assistance. Provide clear details about the location, injuries, and hazards.

Step 3

Seek Medical Attention

Some burn injuries may appear minor but could worsen over time. It is essential to seek medical attention as soon as possible and keep all documentation as it could be used as evidence later.

Step 4

Document the Scene

Take photos or videos of the scene, including any defective products or hazardous conditions that may have contributed to the accident.

Step 5

Identify Witnesses

If there were any witnesses to the accident, gather their names and contact information, as their accounts can provide valuable evidence for your case.

Step 6

Preserve Evidence

Keep any damaged products, clothing, or other items involved in the fire. These can be critical in proving negligence or defects. Be sure to document your injuries with photos. Burn injuries evolve over time and are different for everyone. This is important to showing the injury’s evolution. It’s advisable to take photos of injuries and scars at least once a month.

Step 7

Notify Relevant Authorities

File a report with the fire department or any applicable regulatory agency. Their investigation can help determine the cause of the fire.
