Roughly 400k Honda Lawnmowers and Pressure Washer Engines Recalled Due to Injury Hazard - Lawnmowers

What: Honda Lawnmowers and Pressure Washer Engines

Who: American Honda Motor Co. Inc.

Why: The improperly manufactured camshafts in the engines can cause the starter rope to suddenly retract when pulling to start, posing an injury hazard.

When: The recall was issued on September 14, 2023.

Where: This recall applies to the Honda lawnmowers and pressure washer engines in the United States.

How Customers Can Identify The Recalled Items: Honda customers can identify the lawnmowers via their model, and serial numbers are printed on a label located on the upper rear of the mower deck. Customers who own the recalled pressure washer engines can find the serial number engraved on a flat spot on the engine. For more information, customers can refer to the recall list posted by Honda.

Earlier this month, the American Honda Motor Motor Co. Inc., of Torrance, California, issued a recall of the Honda HRN216 series lawnmowers, Honda HRX217K6 lawnmowers, and the Honda GCV170/200 G5B pressure washer engine after multiple injury reports. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the safety issues are caused by improperly manufactured camshafts in the engines, which can cause the starter rope to suddenly retract when pulling to start.

In a safety recall notice provided by Honda, it elaborated on the safety issues, claiming that for the units equipped with an electric starter, the manufacturing defect may prevent the starter motor on mowers with an electric start from successfully starting the engine. Currently, Honda has received 2,197 reports of incidents related to camshaft failures, seven of which include reports of minor injuries. This recall affects roughly 391,800 units nationwide.

Honda Pressure Washer Recall Details

According to the findings, the recalled pressure washer engine is mounted onto various original equipment manufacturer frames that were sold in multiple retail stores, including Home Depot and Lowe's nationwide, from June 2022 to August 2023, for $370 to $550. Since Honda issued the recall, it has not specified the pressure washer brands using the affected engine. However, customers can still identify the affected pressure washer engines by the product's serial number engraved on a flat spot on the engine, as shown in this PDF

If you find that you own one of the affected pressure washers equipped with the recalled engine, Honda asks that you immediately stop all use and contact an authorized Honda Power Equipment dealer in order to schedule an appointment for a free inspection and repair.
