Vytorin
Merck and Schering-Plough, manufacturer of cholesterol drug giant Vytorin, is facing a class action lawsuit following the release of some damaging research; Vytorin users claim that the drug offers no more medical benefits than its less costly, generic counterparts. On January 25, 2008, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced their plans to assess a final analysis of these findings.
Vytorin, which is a combination of Zetia and Zocor, claims to reduce bad cholesterol levels. On January 14, 2008, the results of a clinical trial were released to the public. In this trial, the relationship between Vytorin and the buildup of cholesterol plaque within the arteries of the neck was compared to the reduction effects Zocor has on plaque inside these same arteries. (Note: Zocor is available in generic form.) Data compiled at the conclusion of this research shows that Vytorin does lower cholesterol, but there is not a dramatic difference in its ability to rid the inner walls of the arteries of plaque. Excessive plaque lining the arteries poses a greater risk of heart attack or stroke.
Class action lawsuits have now been filed in multiple states on behalf of patients and insurance companies who purchased Vytorin, which evidently has no positive medical impact on the people taking it. They argue that Merck and Schering-Plough were more concerned with profit margin than the well-being of the drug’s users. In these lawsuits, plaintiffs are seeking compensation for damages caused by the cost of Vytorin prescriptions or for the difference between the amount spent on Vytorin and what it would have cost to buy the generic drug instead.
