Global Payments Breach
A security breach to data held by credit card payment processor, Global Payments, Inc., has potentially compromised the accounts of anywhere from 50,000 to 10 million cardholders of Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Discover credit cards. Various news outlets are reporting that both Track 1 and Track 2 data may have been stolen from Global Payments, which could allow a person improperly using that information to make online purchases or create cloned copies of credit cards.
About Global Payments
According to their website, Global Payments, is one of the “world’s largest electronic transaction processing companies, headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia.”
When Did the Breach Occur?
Reportedly, the security breach could affect cards issued by the credit card companies directly or any cards issued by a bank, credit union, and other institution bearing the Visa, Mastercard, American Express or Discover Card logos. Global Payments disclosed Friday, March 30, that it has been working with the Secret Service and a private forensic company since early March of 2012 to determine the full scope of the security breach and the possible responsible parties. At the present time, it is believed that the breach occurred between January 21 and February 25, 2012.
